With prints from local fine art printer Resolve Photo and local sign shop Little Rock Printing, and framing from 17th Ave Framing and in association with supporters of the Perspectives Movement Media Lab YYC, Stuff4Him, and Guildhall Home. Work will be on display at Phil&Sebastian Mission Cafe. Possible Opening/Event night to be determined.
We have tentatively agreed on an exclusive solo show with renown public artist Curtis Van Charles. He is bringing a new series of paintings highlighting his connection with both our urban and mountain roots. As a collaborative project with his wife, these pieces look to be a wonderful balance of concept, colour and tones. More info to follow.
We are highlighting two student artists this month. Vintage Caffiene Co has graciously allowed us their space to present 2 up and coming artists: Jesse Davidson and Lauren Jacobson. Striking line work and figurative painting to highlight 2 perspectives of younger Calgarian creators.
"As an artist, I am interested in quotidian objects from daily life – things that we interact with, use and consume that are often unnoticed. These things are place-markers; they hold value that others have put onto them, and they give us insight into our own identity and the communities that we take part in. These are items such as a set of keys, a lone Doritos chip, a soiled empty cardboard box, a moving blanket, a plaid shirt, a fried chicken drumstick, or a bottle cap. Through my work, I examine and rearticulate everyday objects, routines and communities, considering ways in which we can find common ground regardless of who we are and where we come from."
Recent MFA graduate Vaughan McMillan brings her first public art show to Phil&Sebastian. A fascinating mixture of hand prints and fabric sculpting, Vaughan will transform the cafe into a figurative feast!
Come join us Friday May 17, 7-9 pm. Our two resident artists Jesse Davidson and Laura Jacobson will be in house for a meet and greet party night to celebrate their first shows and their incredible art. No cover charge. Just good vibes and great art.
Jesse Davidson is a local Calgary Artist specializing in pen and ink drawings on illustration board. With the serious tone that modern society can tend to have, Jesse’s intent is to inject some fun and lighthearted entertainment to life. There is something interesting in taking a closer look at things, and the density of detail is meant to bring the viewer in for a closer look, and convey a sense of discovery with fun little bits hidden in each piece. Sometimes drawings tell you to go sideways, so lets enjoy the ride and get a little weird with it!
